Hurricane season in southeast Texas, Houston Texas area, is typically June through November. If you live or have lived in southeast Texas you have most likely experienced what it can be like during our Gulf Coast Hurricane Season and heavy winds.

By choosing impact resistant home siding, you can help provide better protection to the things inside your home, especially your family. Here is something to think about, the sheetrock on the walls inside your home is very breakable and easily penetrable, so what can help in stopping airborne objects from coming through it and potentially right into your home? A great solution could be, your home’s siding.

LP SmartSide Siding is a great choice with its being stronger than vinyl or fiber cement siding products such as popular and well-known products like Hardie. SmartSide does an excellent job at providing this additional protection for your home and family!

The reason why SmartSide Siding is so strong and durable is because it is an LP engineered wood product produced with wood fibers which are distributed in all different directions giving the SmartSide siding incredible strength and durability.  This will last for many years to come and help protect your home and family during storms and  is hurricane, projectile and impact resistant.

One of the purposes of the siding on your home’s exterior is to keep outside objects outside and from entering into the inside of your home.  As well as help your home to withstand the toughest of our Texas Gulf Coast weather conditions and from airborne wind-driven impacts.

Looking at the two photos below, you will see how an airborne, wind-driven projectile struck a home, penetrating the wall and actually entering the inside of the home by blasting through the exteriors wall, through the sheetrock and insulation. Now, what if that was a 2″x4″ or a tree branch that came through the wall and was to hit someone on the other side? This is a scary thought for sure!

Hurricane Ike Houston Texas

Back in 2008, as the intense effect of Hurricane Ike were felt, Houstonians began urgently seeking safer shelter from the storm as so many home exteriors had been receiving hazardous, wind-driven projectile damage. With insight to the number of the coastal wind driven projectiles that can become airborne during a Hurricane such as Ike, LP Building Products hired NASA to perform Ballistic Impact testing on their SmartSide Siding Product. Their goal: To put the product to the test to demonstrate the impact resistance of this product, their finding are detailed below.

Your Home exterior siding can help protect the integrity of your home and most importantly, what is inside your home like your family and pets. With the sheetrock being so easily breakable, consider what there is to stop airborne objects from coming into your home through the walls! A great solution A great solution to this problem lies in the exterior product on the home, the siding.

LP SmartSide Siding demonstrates the projectile resistance very well in the NASA video below. Part of the job of the siding on your home is to keep outside objects from entering through the walls into the inside of your home, thus keeping the occupants inside the safe. This link will take you to an informative PDF about the impact resistance of the LP SmartSide Siding Impact Testing 2012 for your reference and viewing.

The video below is a must-see showing the brute strength of SmartSide Siding. Here they are projecting a baseball at the siding at very fast speeds and the ball just bounces off from the siding. You cannot do this with fiber cement (like Hardi Siding), as it instantly fails offering little to no protection from  impacts from Hurricane strength wind-driven projectiles.

Believe it or not, NASA was hired to perform this product ballistic impact testing of LP SmartSide Siding also performing the same testing on Fiber Cement (Hardie) Siding revealing some very shocking results, this video certainly is a must see!

I see how strong siding can keep something from coming into my home form the outside area, thanks Texas home exteriors.

    • Greg Kapitan says:

Hi William, Yes most homeowners are not aware how much safer their home could be with stronger siding when storms like hurricanes come to our gulf coast area. It is quite easy when a wind driven object is airborne to enter into a home and come through the sheet rock. Stronger siding will hinder that experience and make any home safer from wind driven objects.
