You’re outside, raking up the leaves and debris from a recent major storm. Surveying the damage, you realize your home has escaped unscathed. You smile to yourself, as relief washes over you; all is well. Suddenly, a stranger appears in your driveway and beckons you his way. You’re immediately wary of what he may be peddling, and approach cautiously. Before you can even stop walking his way, he’s pitching to you about the “damage” he’s seeing on your roof from the storm. You look up, attempting to identify what exactly he’s pointing out because you hadn’t noticed anything earlier. Doubt creeps in, and you’re filled with dread in place of relief. He’s the professional, so he should know best, right? Wrong.

Roofing scams are one of the most common, oldest tricks in the world, yet people still easily fall prey to them. They seek out people who don’t know better and those just looking for the best deal. After taking your money, they perform the work quickly and disappear into the night; never to be heard from again. This means if the work was shoddy, you can’t recover that money and you’ll be left footing the bill to fix it.

We know this sounds scary, but with these important tips you can avoid getting scammed by these low-lifes. Here’s what to look out for.

1. MYSTERIOUS DAMAGE

Chances are, your roof is absolutely fine after a storm. You’ve looked around and nothing has stood out as concerning to you, but you can’t shake the salesman telling you you’re wrong. They used terms you didn’t understand and got you a bit confused, but trust that you aren’t wrong. Send them on their way, then use your trustiest search engine to find a reputable company like Texas Home Exteriors. A good brand will have reviews, a permanent address and an easy way to reach out to ask questions. This is who you want coming to look at your roof.

2. THEY ARE NOT YOUR FRIEND

“Storm Chasers” are roofing scammers who suddenly show up in storm-hit areas, making promises that sound too good to be true. They prey on the stress and chaos following a big storm with quick, cheap work. Their business names are also usually ones you’ve never heard of or seen signs for before.

They’re known for offering immediate services with huge price gashes, while also billing insurance for you to get paid. Yes, this sounds good…but it’s too good to be true, so don’t buy in.

3. ABNORMALLY LOW BILLING

Roof repair scammers come in very low in their prices, then will increase them over the time they work. They’ll blame it on material costs or unknown “problems” to justify it to you.

Simply put, insurance companies are fully aware of how important roofs are to a home. They protect everything and everyone inside, afterall. Which means, in the grand scheme, it prevents them from a bigger payout for flooding or mold damage. Additionally, if the roof is simply damaged at the moment, it’s much cheaper to pay for repairs than an entirely new roof down the road due to the lack of repairs. However, it’s important to note that some insurers now restrict their coverage and most won’t cover aging roofs at all. This may make you curious as to if your roof will even be covered should the need arise.

WHAT KIND OF DAMAGE DOES INSURANCE USUALLY COVER?

Typically, dwelling coverage that is included in homeowners insurance is there to protect all of your home’s structure from a variety of “normal” damage resulting from fire, hail and wind. Because of this, holes from hail or a fire caused by lightning should be covered either partially or fully.

WILL THERE BE A DEDUCTIBLE?

Most likely. Every policy is different, so it’s impossible to say for certain off the cuff, but there is usually a deductible that must be paid out prior to insurance covering repairs and replacements. Additionally, there will be a coverage limit, so it’s critical to understand what your policy entails so you know what to expect. For instance, your policy may not cover wind, so you need to read through it before committing to anything.

WHAT ABOUT LEAKS?

Provided you do not have any exclusions in your insurance policy, leaks that are the result of natural incidences such as fire, wind and hail should be covered.

WHAT IS NOT USUALLY COVERED?

Again, every policy is unique, but things that are not covered typically includes wear and tear and damage caused by neglect. It is usually only accidental or sudden damage that is covered by insurance, so again be aware of what is in your policy prior to committing to anything. Texas Home Exteriors is here to help guide you throught the insurance process and act as your middle-man so you’re not taken advantage of. Give us a call today to check on how your roof is doing.

When a large storm rolls through your area, it can cause major damage to roofs. From big branches to damaged shingles, storms aren’t a roof’s best friend. So, you’re probably wondering what the state of your roof is and how you can identify any potential problem areas. Is it unsafe? Does a professional need to come pay a visit?

We know how confusing it can be, especially if the storm was particularly devastating. You’re not an expert, and things may be stressful due to other damage done to your home, yard or car. It’s okay though. Take a deep breath and read through this list of things to look for before making any firm decisions on your next step.

Check For The Obvious

Yes, it’s possible that the damage is right in front of your eyes. You won’t even have to look, things will just be appearing. This includes:

  • New water marks on the ceiling
  • Shingles that are missing or obviously damage/perhaps lying in the yard
  • Wet walls or newly peeling paint on the walls
  • Flashing that is newly broken or damaged around the chimney or skylights
  • Leaks or other water-related issues around the house
  • Branches or trees lying on the roof

These will all be very visible and do require a professional visit to determine the extent of the damage and how it can be remedied. However, not all damage is so in-your-face.

Visible But Less Obvious Problems

If you’re reading this, we’re guessing you’re not an expert in roofing. That’s totally okay! Now, with that said, unless you are a professional, we’d like to warn you to stay off the roof. There could easily be rot or loose shingles up there that could endanger your safety, and that’s simply unacceptable. Leave that work to the professionals. However, you can check for some things from the ground! Some signs of damage include:

  • Buildup of shingle granules
  • Dents and dings on shingles
  • Damaged or missing flashing or sealant along skylights, vents, chimneys and the edge of the roof
  • Water damage to the attic

Get A Professional Inspection From a Company That Cares

Sometimes, things are just better left to the professionals. You want to be certain that all damage is identified and repaired, in order to keep you and your loved ones safe and protected from the elements. You’ll sleep better knowing a professional has handled your situation, and that your home is free of damage, leaks, failure and more when Texas Home Exteriors has taken a look at your situation.

Even if a storm hasn’t hit recently, regular inspections can help you be prepared for anything that comes your way. Not only that, but inspections and staying up on repairs can help extend the life of your roof significantly!

A professional roof inspector will be able to identify damage and can explain to you what repairs should be done in order to mitigate future damage as well. Contact Texas Home Exteriors in Spring, TX today to have your roof looked at and your peace of mind back intact.
